Fans Question NTR’s Double Standards Amid Deepfake Row

Jr NTR’s swift response to the AI-generated deepfake video involving Janhvi Kapoor has earned praise across the film industry. The actor strongly condemned the misuse of artificial intelligence to create obscene content using visuals from Devara’s hit song ‘Chuttamalle’ and vowed legal action against those responsible. His statement, in which he described the act as “Disgusting. Sick. Shameless,” sparked wider conversations about the exploitation of women through digitally manipulated content. However, his strong stance has also prompted some netizens to revisit a controversy from 2020 involving his own fanbase.

The controversy dates back to June 2020, when actress Meera Chopra, known for appearing in Pawan Kalyan’s Bangaram, faced severe online abuse after saying during a social media interaction that she did not know Jr NTR and was not his fan. Some users identifying themselves as his fans reportedly sent her rape and death threats, along with threats against her family. Meera filed a complaint, and Hyderabad Cybercrime Police registered cases against unidentified social media users. She also appealed directly to NTR, questioning whether he was proud of such a fan following.

Why Are Netizens Bringing Up The Old Controversy?

With NTR now taking a strong stand against the abuse of Janhvi through AI-generated content, some netizens are questioning whether celebrities should also speak out when people claiming to be their fans threaten and harass others online. NTR’s response to the Janhvi deepfake has been public, but the 2020 incident involving Meera Chopra also raises questions about the responsibility of stars to condemn abusive behaviour by their supporters. However, the two incidents are different, and the actions of individual fans should not automatically be attributed to the actor himself. The key question being raised online is whether public figures should consistently speak against harassment, regardless of who the victims are or who the perpetrators claim to support.
